Balance is the process of being in equilibrium—remaining upright whether you are in motion or standing still. Balance training requires some challenge to the center of gravity so that the user moves outside of the base of support. Proprioception is the body’s ability to process information about its orientation or position at any given time. Proprioception, visual cues and appropriate muscle responses help to maintain balance. Exercising on an unstable surface forces your body to utilize deep and middle layer stabilizer muscles normally not targeted when exercising in a more stable environment. Balance boards, wobble boards, balance cushions, balance pads, balance discs and stability balls are all tools to aid in balance training.
